The Dudley Boyz return is exactly what the WWE Tag Team division needs

Last night on Raw, Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley returned to lay out WWE Tag Team champions The New Day in classic fashion. It was a huge surprise on a very solid episode of RAW, and it revitalizes the tag team division in a matter of seconds.

Just over a full decade after their last appearance at One Night Stand 2005, the Dudley Boyz immediately took up where they left off against Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman. They took out Kofi Kingston and Big E, before delivering a Wassup and a 3D to Xavier Woods. After a staredown with Titus O'Neil and Darren Young, they left the ring to the cheers of fans.

With the division in a holding pattern with a feud between The New Day and the Prime Time Players, Los Matadores, the Lucha Dragons and The Ascension have all fallen repeatedly to both of the other teams. While Jimmy and Jey Uso should return in the next few weeks and a new Wyatt Family unit seems to be forming, the Players and The New Day need new foes and the tag team division needs new blood. Finding it in the form of the most decorated tag team in history is the best move possible for the modern WWE.

The Dudleys have held twenty-three major tag team titles in the United States and Japan, including eight reigns in ECW and nine in WWE. The fact that they're probably in the best shape of their lives only makes their return to WWE work even better.

The Dudleys don't need to take a bunch more title wins with their return to WWE television, but matches against The New Day and the Prime Time Players will enliven the division while the Usos, the Wyatts or one of the other teams floating on the second tier can find strong booking towards the top of the division. Their arrival instantly makes the titles feel more important as well, a smart move for belts that have more often than not felt like an afterthought since Bubba Ray and D-Von left a decade ago.

Of course, TNA fans know exactly how good Bubba Ray (or Bully Ray) can be on his own as well. It will be interesting to see what else WWE writers can do with the veteran talents in months ahead if they make the effort.

The Dudley Boyz get their first match on this Thursday's Smackdown.
